Person Centred Therapy
There are 9999 ways to get to heaven.
The counselling therapies I draw upon are:
Therapeutic Approaches
(Chinese Proverb)
Person centred therapy supports you to develop a more positive sense of self and helps you to find your true strengths and potential. Counselling is accepting and non-judgemental and thus allows you to freely express any emotions and feelings.
I think there is no one therapy that suits us all, all of the time.
So when I work with you, I can draw upon a number of therapeutic approaches to best suit your needs. However, if you have an interest in working with a particular therapy I’m happy to do that.
Voice Dialogue is a process that enables us to get in touch with our inner selves. These selves greatly influence our life and the choices we make on a day-to-day basis. Voice Dialogue provides a safe way to experience these parts. Voice Dialogue helps us to develop an internal centre of awareness about how these parts impact upon us and influence our life direction. As we develop this awareness we are able to exert more choice in our life and find our place of balance between conflicting parts.
Voice Dialogue
Body Dialogue
Related to Voice Dialogue and Somatic Therapies, Body Dialogue enables us to get in touch with the huge source of information that our body holds for us. This powerful method uses dialogue and creative processes to decipher the messages our bodies are sending us.
Dream Exploration
Many people are deeply affected by their dreams, they can be elating, intriguing, puzzling and at times very frightening. People often feel very unsure about sharing the content of their dreams. I can provide a safe and supportive way to explore and understand what your dreams mean within the context of your life.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy deals with thoughts and perceptions, and how these can affect our feelings and behaviour.
By reassessing our negative thoughts we can learn more flexible, positive ways of thinking, which can ultimately affect our feelings and behaviour. Behaviour is learnt or conditioned, and if a behaviour can be learnt, then it can be unlearnt (or reconditioned). This makes this therapy particularly helpful in working with addictions.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is an intentionally focused awareness of our immediate experience. "Focused awareness" is a conscious moment-by-moment attention to the situational elements of an experience including our thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and surroundings.
One aim of mindfulness is to become grounded in the present moment; we can learn to observe the arising and passing of experience. We learn not to judge the experiences and thoughts, nor to try to 'figure things out' and draw conclusions, or change anything.
The challenge during mindfulness is to simply observe. Benefits of mindfulness practice include reduction of stress, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.
Positive Psychology
Positive psychology is the scientific study of what makes life most worth living. It is a call for psychological science and practice to be as concerned with strength as with weakness; as interested in building the best things in life as in repairing the worst; and as concerned with making the lives of normal people fulfilling as with healing pathology.
Some areas of focus for therapy are happiness; hope; optimism and helplessness; flow and character strengths and virtues.
Journaling
Journaling or “writing therapy,” is the act of writing down thoughts and feelings to sort through problems and come to deeper understandings of oneself or the issues in ones life. Many people who struggle with deep emotional conflicts or traumas are unable to express their feelings in a verbal or physical way. Journaling allows a person the freedom of expression without fear of retaliation, frustration, or humiliation. This has been shown to have mental and physical health benefits. This can be the basis of therapy work or can supplement other therapies as a "homework" exercise.
I am a keen writer and enjoy supporting others in their writing process in person, by skype, by phone or by email.
